UN Special Envoy Harps On The Release Of Kidnapped School Girls

Gordon Brown, a United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education has renewed calls for the release of the over 234 female students that were kidnapped on April 14 from GGSS, Chibok Borno State, by Boko Haram sect members.

Brown, who made the call on Monday in massage to commemorate the Day of the African Child at the UN in New York, urged the world to remember the abducted schoolgirls during the celebration, and commended youths around the world for demanding education for all.

 

Speaking at the event tagged: "A child friendly, quality, free and compulsory education for all children in Africa" Brown said: “Thousands of people have come together united with one cause: Safe schools for every girl and boy. While the global community has failed to deliver safe schooling, young people are demanding safe, quality schools for all children everywhere, and they are standing in solidarity with the northern Nigerian girls of Chibok, and all those around the world who face these struggles”.

 

Meanwhile, the United Nations again stressed the need for a combined effort in fighting terrorism in North-East, and also reiterated its support for ongoing efforts by the Nigerian government to secure the schoolgirls’ safe release.

 

The Day of the African Child celebration is slated for June 16 of every year in honour of the school children that were massacred in 1976 during a demonstration in Soweto, South Africa. The children were demanding to be taught in their own language as well as a change in the poor education that was being offered by the apartheid regime.

 

The African Union (AU) chooses the Day in 1991, and urged that events should to be organised around the world to promote children’s rights. An assembly of young people converged at Union’s headquarter Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, yesterday to deliver a call of action about education to world leaders.

Mikel Obi: We Need To Raise Our Game To Reach Next Round At World Cup

Nigerian defensive midfielder John Obi Mikel believes that they need to raise their game if they want to reach the next round.
According to Mikel Obi who received the Man of the Match award, they will likely need wins against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Argentina in their final two games, though victory against the former will give them an excellent chance of making Last 16.
"Naturally we're disappointed because we know what it means to win your opening match at the World Cup," Mikel said. "We thought we had a good chance of winning. We created some openings in the first half and I think we deserved to score. Iran kept us at bay, though, and they were well organised at the back.
"We need to raise our game if we want to reach the next round. We prepared very well for this World Cup and we can't afford to drop another point in our remaining games," he said.

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi stated that the team played very well in the first half. "The forwards were very active and they had a couple of chances to score, though we couldn't put them away. We lost our shape in the second half," he continued.
"I felt we could have won the game but we were lacking a bit of inspiration on the pitch. All credit to Iran. They stuck to their game-plan and were able to put it into practice from start to finish."
Next up for the Super Eagles is a meeting with Bosnia-Herzegovina in Cuiabá on Saturday where a win would likely oust their opponents from the competition and put one Nigerian foot in the second round.

Cultists Kill Man, Dump Body On Lagos Highway

Suspected cultists, Black Axe Confraternity, popularly called Aiye after killing a 35-year-old man, Yemi, aka Topia on June 14, reportedly dumped his body on the Olopo Meji, Oworonshoki Expressway leaving the body to be crushed many times by on-coming vehicles.

The deceased a resident of Oworonshoki area of Lagos State, according to a resident, Michael Oladipupo, said the victim was the son of a landlord on Mabawonku Street.
Oladipupo who said the deceased was not killed by a hit and run driver but rather his killers dropped him on the road to cover their tracks said: “I was called this morning (Saturday) around 9am and told that there was a corpse on the road. I came here and saw his body on the expressway. But as we traced its movement, we discovered that he was dragged to the expressway from a spot close to the Oworonshoki Bridge.
“After killing him, they dumped him on the road so that the scene would look like an accident. Vehicles and heavy-duty trucks passing by have torn his body into pieces so that people will not be able to identify him.”
The deceased it was learnt from sources who craved anonymity that the victim, who was a driver, was lured out of his room in the night and bundled into an iron cart, on which he was wheeled to the point of the murder.
A source said, “It was the Aiye members that killed him. Yemi is not a cultist, but he had friends who were Eiye members. “Because there was a fight between the two cult groups, Yemi was mistaken for a member and targeted.
“They first inflicted machete wounds on him, but when it appeared he was not completely dead, they dragged him to the expressway for oncoming vehicles to finish what they started.”
The family of the deceased has been thrown into mourning following his brutal killing.
Meanwhile, according to Punch, a family member who was overheard speaking on the phone near the site of the incident said: “They have killed him. He called me few days ago on the telephone that somebody came to his house with his boys and threatened to kill him if he does not pay the money he owed him.”
When approached for comment, she said, “He was sleeping in his room when they cunningly drew him out.”
It was learnt from a police source in the Oworonsoki Police Station that the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit had been informed of the development to evacuate the corpse from the road.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Ngozi Braide who confirmed the incident said: “Yes, the incident happened. I will confirm to you later whether suspects had been arrested or not.”
